Department responsibilities: Fire Rescue, Water Rescue, Fire Prevention, and Fire Inspection.

Fire Department Facts: The first fire department in the City of Niles was instituted in 1870. It was a volunteer department that used a used engine that James Ward (see HISTORY PAGE) brought over from Pittsburgh. New fire engines were bought in 1875 and again in 1898.(Source: History of Niles, Ohio by The Niles Centennial History Club and McKinley High School, 1984, published by The Niles Daily Times.)

The present Niles Fire Department is no longer a volunteer department, but has 2 stations with 31 full time fire fighters, with its main station on East State Street. Its rescue equipment and vehicles inlcude 3 pumpers, 2 aerials, a boat with trailer, a special response trailer, and 2 utility vehicles. The city enjoys the benefit of having a fire department that is staffed 24 hours a day, which allows a quicker response to fire calls and other emergencies.
