The
head of government in The City of Niles is the Mayor (the current mayor
of Niles is Ralph Infante. See the Office of the Mayor Page, or CLICK
HERE). The mayor is assisted in decision making by the elected city
council (see Niles City Council Page, or CLICK HERE),
and the appointed positions of Service Director and Safety Director.Current Service Director: Neil Buccino Current Safety Director: Maurice Guarino Government Responsibilities: Oversee all budgetary decisions, Board of Control, collect and pass legislation, invest money for the city, oversee all city departments to serve the public, provide the citizens with water, electric, sewer, garbage pickup, cemetery services, safety, etc. The City of Niles Government System is Statutory. These documents serve as a constitution for the city, housing laws and ordinances passed by past and present City Council members, that keep the city in successful operation. The ordinances are introduced as legislation during City Council meetings. If a citizen of Niles has an issue that needs brought to the city's attention, they are encouraged to bring it to either the Mayor or to Council. Depending on the topic, it may be assigned to a committee for further research. The topic would be discussed, and brought back to council if a vote is needed to pass legislation. There is an "open door" policy to bring issues to both City Council and to the Mayor. History The City of Niles first mayor was H.H. Mason, elected in 1866. The city council under him were James Draa (recorder), James Ward Jr., William Davis, David Griffiths, Richard Holeton, and Henry Schaffer. The first city hall was a wooden structure which stood where the McKinley Memorial now stands.
